Instant Messaging (IM) คือ โปรแกรมที่ใช้ในการสื่อสารและส่งข้อความในระหว่างเพื่อนหรือกลุ่มคนที่อยู่ในอินเทอร์เน็ต โดยรูปแบบจะคล้ายกับ E-mail โดยรูปแบบการส่งข้อมูลจะประกอบไปด้วยตัวหนังสือในการส่งแต่ละครั้ง แต่จะต่างกับ E-mail ตรงที่ คุณไม่ต้องนั่งรอเป็นชั่วโมงหรือวันๆ เพื่อรอการตอบกลับจากเพื่อนของคุณ เพราะข้อความที่คุณส่งไป จะส่งตรงไปหาเพื่อนของคุณ “ทันที” เหมือนกับการพูดคุยปกติเลย ถ้ายังนึกไม่ออกว่าคืออะไร ก็ลองนึกถึงโปรแกรมจำพวก ICQ, MSN Messenger หรือ Yahoo Messenger
